Roman numerals use just seven symbols — I (1), V (5), X (10), L (50), C (100), D (500), M (1000). They have no zero and cannot show negatives or fractions; the standard range is 1 to 3999.

About Roman numerals

Roman numerals come from ancient Rome and combine seven Latin letters — I, V, X, L, C, D, M — to form numbers. A symbol repeats at most three times (III = 3); for 4, 9 and so on a “subtractive” form is used, placing a smaller symbol before a larger one: IV = 4, IX = 9, XL = 40, CM = 900.

For example 2024 is MMXXIV and 1994 is MCMXCIV. Roman numerals have no zero, and the largest standard value is 3999 (MMMCMXCIX). Today they appear on clock faces, book chapters, film years and event editions.
